Now we take the next step: how advanced lifters and coaches use bar speed to manage fatigue, monitor readiness, and prepare for competition.
Here's the Key:At higher levels of strength training, VBT becomes less about percentages and more about managing performance.
Using VBT to Monitor Readiness
One of the most valuable applications of Velocity Based Training is measuring daily readiness. Even experienced lifters have days where performance is higher or lower than expected.
Bar speed provides instant feedback about how prepared the athlete is to train on that day.
- If warm-up sets move faster than expected, the athlete may be capable of heavier work.
- If warm-up velocities are unusually slow, fatigue may already be present.
- If bar speed drops rapidly during early sets, the athlete may need to adjust the session.
This allows training to adapt to the athlete instead of forcing the athlete to conform to a rigid plan.
Velocity and Fatigue Management
Fatigue management becomes increasingly important as training intensity rises. Velocity loss can be used as an objective way to determine when enough work has been performed.
Progress happens when training stays optimal. Continuously adding exercises and volume because an athlete cannot move beyond old habits rarely produces better results. More often, it just creates unnecessary fatigue.
If the first rep of a set moves at 0.60 m/s and the last rep drops to 0.48 m/s, a 20% velocity loss has occurred. Many programs would terminate the set at that point to maintain quality.
This method allows athletes to accumulate productive work without excessive fatigue that can interfere with future training sessions.
Using VBT During Peaking Cycles
Velocity Based Training can also help guide athletes during competition preparation. Many of the MMBC athletes are in competition prep as this is being published!
As athletes approach a meet, bar speeds in heavier ranges become especially valuable indicators of readiness.
When Bar Speed Is Faster
- The athlete may be recovering well
- Higher attempt selection may be possible
- Training fatigue is likely manageable
When Bar Speed Is Slower
- Fatigue may still be present
- Training volume may need adjustment
- Attempt selection may need to be conservative
Rather than guessing about readiness, velocity provides measurable feedback during the most important phase of training.
Calling Attempts with Bar Speed
Many coaches now use bar speed to help guide attempt selection in powerlifting meets.
If an athlete performs a heavy single in training at a velocity consistent with maximal strength output, coaches can estimate how much weight may be possible on the platform.
While velocity should never replace coaching experience, it can provide valuable data that helps confirm decisions.
